WENZEL invests in the future with new processing machine
August 17th, 2020 - WENZEL increases its manufacturing capacity at the production site in Wiesthal and invests in a new 5-axis machining centre from DMG MORI.
The Gantry Machine DMU 200 is excellently suited for the machining of very large workpieces and enables maximum precision with the highest dynamics. The total project volume is over 1.2 million Euro and will have paid for itself in 6 to 7 years with a utilisation of 1,000 working hours per year.
"With the new DMG machining centre, we are very well positioned for the future", explains CEO Dr. Heike Wenzel and she is sure that the investment will contribute to even more flexibility in the production process and shorter delivery times for customers. Bernd Steigerwald, Production Manager at WENZEL, enthuses: "With the new machine we work even more efficiently. The DMU 200 Gantry offers 5-axis machining for the production of large components with a length of up to 4,500 mm, a width of 2,500 mm and a height of 1,350 mm. The maximum table load is 15 tons. There is space for 120 tools and the machine reaches a speed of 20,000 revolutions per minute. The CELOS control and operating system from Heidenhain is Industry 4.0-ready and has direct interfaces to ERP systems".
By heavy transport to Wiesthal
On 25 February 2020 the DMU 200 Gantry was loaded at DMG in Seebach and started the 2-day journey to the WENZEL Group in Wiesthal. The heavy transport with a length of 26 metres and a width of 4 metres needed two days, as it was only allowed to drive at night under escort. Via Nuremberg it went on 27 February 2020 on the A3 to the exit Weibersbrunn. From there a police escort was added and the journey continued on the B26 via Neuhütten to Wiesthal, passing a few dicey spots. Sometimes it was necessary to unscrew crash barriers and to cut-off traffic signs. The machine was unloaded with a truck-mounted crane and transported to its parking place by special means of transport, which required perfect interaction between all those involved. Everything went according to plan and the machining centre is now at its intended location, where the assembly is now being completed. "From around the middle of April we will be able to work productively with our new machine", Bernd Steigerwald is pleased to say.
